Kharkhorin is a town located at the lower end of the upper valley of the Orkhon River, part of the World Heritage Site Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape. In the mid-13th century, Kharkhorin, or rather Karakorum was a place, where Chinggis Khaan established a supply base. His son Ögedei ordered the construction of a proper capital, a decree that attracted traders, dignitaries and skilled workers from across Asia and even Europe. In 1388 Karakorum was destroyed by Manchurian soldiers in 1388, and whatever was left of it was used to build Erdene Zuu Monstery in the 16th century. Today Kharkhorin is one of the main tourist destination in Mongolia, and a base for those who want to travel deeper in the Khnagai Mountains. The vicinity of the city is full of places attracting visitors’ attention. During your tour you will visit some of them, including Elsen tasarkhai dunes, Tövkhön monastery and Hujirt hot spring resort.
