Tours Classic Tours Gobi Desert Tour

Price: 80 USD pp/per day (budget tour) ( 6 days )

The Gobi desert, one of the world's great deserts, covers much of the southern part of Mongolia. Unlike the Sahara there are few sand dunes in the Gobi; rather you'll find large barren expenses of gravel plains and rocky outcrops. The climate here is extreme. Temperatures reach +40° C. in summer, and -40 in winter. Strong winds up to 140 km/h make travel dangerous in spring and fall. Gobi is home form many endangered species, including wild Bactrian (two-humped) camels, wild ass, and a small population of Maazalai, the only desert-inhabiting bear.

Day 1. Ulaanbaatar - Dalanzadgad - Yolyn Am

In the morning our representative will meet you at your hotel, and drive you to the Chinggis Khan airport for a flight to Dalanzadgad, the capital city of Umnugovi aimag. In Dalanzadgad you will meet with your local driver and guide. Next you will drive to Yolin Am, a deep and narrow gorge in the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains. Yolyn Am is notable for a deep ice field, which is several meters thick by the end of winter, and is several kilometers long. In past years it remained year round, but the modern ice field tends to disappear by September. After visiting Yolyn Am you will be taken to a ger camp, where you will stay overnight.

Days 3 - 4. Bayanzag - Khongoryn Els

After breakfast you will leave Bayanzag and drive to the famous Khongorin Els, some of the largest and most spectacular sand dunes in Mongolia. The dunes, located in the central part of Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park, are up to 30 m high, 12 km wide and about 100 km long. Getting to the top is exhausting; every step forward is followed by a meter of backsliding but the views of the desert from the sandy summit are wonderful. You will spend two day in the area, exploring the dunes, riding camels and visiting local nomadic families.
