Altai Tavan Bogd National Park covers 6,362 square kilometers of the Bayan-Ulgii Province just south of Tavan Bogd, the highest mountain in Mongolia. The park is home to three large freshwater lakes, several waterfalls, and 34 glaciers. The largest glacier, Potanin, covers more than 20 square kilometers. Tavan Bogd Mountain is considered sacred to local Kazakhs, Tuvans, and Mongolians. Even today, these tribes use the region for religious ceremonies. With tens of thousands of petroglyphs and ancient artifacts covering the mountain, the world has declared this national park a World Heritage Site.
