Tours Short Tours Elsen Tasarkhai

Price: ( 2 Days )

Elsen Tasarkhai is one of the most picturesque places in Mongolia. This 80 km long sand dune is located only 300 km from Ulaanbaatar. The main road separates the dune into two parts, with Mongol Els to the south and Khugnu Tarnyn Els to the north. The sand here is sodden under its surface, so shrubberies such as willow, elm and dogwood, are able to grow. Elsen Tasarkhai lies less than a hundred kilometers away from Kharkhorin, where Chinggis Khaan established a supply base in the mid-13th century. Soon after, his son Ugedei ordered the construction of a proper capital, attracting traders, dignitaries, and skilled workers from across Asia and as far as Europe.

Day 1. A Day at the Dunes

In the morning we will meet at a gathering point in Ulaanbaatar and drive west to the beautiful sand dunes of Elsen Tasarkhai. On the way, we will eat lunch in a ger camp. Afterwards, we will mount horses tour Erdene Khamba, a temple located at the base of the Khugnu Khan Mountain. In the evening we will have time to enjoy the sand dunes.

Stay overnight in a ger camp. Lunch and Dinner

Day 2. Kharkhorin's Monasteries

We will start the day with an hour-long camel ride. Then we will leave Elsen Tasarkhai and drive to Kharkhorin, an ancient capital of the Mongol Empire. In Kharkhorin, we will visit the Erdene Zuu Monastery, one of Mongolia's oldest and largest monasteries. It was built in the 16th century by Zanabazar, the first Buddhist leader of Mongolia. From Kharkhorin, we will drive back to the gathering point in Ulaanbaatar.
