Known as the Blue Pearl of the Mongolia, Khuvsgul Lake stretches 136km deep into the Siberian taiga. This second-largest lake (2760 sq km) in Mongolia is also country’s deepest lake (up to 262m) as well as the world's 14th-largest source of fresh water. The lake is full of fish, such as lenok, salomon grayling and sturgeon. It also has more than 200 species of bird; including the Baikal teal, black stork and Altai snowcock. The surrounding taiga and mountains are home to argali sheep, ibex, bear, sable, reindeer and moose. There are three separate, unique peoples living in the area: Darkhad, Buriat and Tsaatan (aka Dukha). All of them are shamanists rather than Buddhists. The lake is a part of the Khuvsgul Lake National Park it’s also connected with one single river (Eg) with Lake Baikal in Siberia.

1st option: Round-way flight from Ulaanbaatar city to Murun city, car transportation from Murun to Khovsgol Lake
Day 1. Ulaanbaatar - Khovsgol Lake
In the morning you will be transferred to the Chinggis Khaan International Airport for your flight to Murun city, the capital city of Khovsgol province. At the local airport you will meet your guide and driver. Together you will drive to Khatgal village located at southern tip of the lake. From Khatgal we will drive to a local ger camp in which we will stay during the festival.

Day 2. Khovsgol Lake
In the morning you will drive to the main site of the festival and participate in the opening ceremony. Later you will observe or even participate in a variety of competitions such as ice sculpture competition, sumo wrestling, ankle bone shooting on the frozen lake, and of course a skating race. You will also have a great opportunity to see a shamanistic worshiping ceremony and a national folklore concert etc.
Overnight in a ger camp. Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner
Day 3. Khovsgol Lake
Today you will see the rest of festival competitions including a horse sledding competition. After lunch time, you will be taken for horse trip along the frozen shore of Khovsgol. Later you will visit a nomadic family and see how herders deal with harsh winter conditions. Visit to nomadic family is also included in the itinerary and you will see how the nomadic people live in harsh winter time. After that you will participate in the closing ceremony of the Ice Festival and enjoy bonfire.

Day 4. Khovsgol Lake - Ulaanbaatar
After breakfast you will drive back to Murun and fly back to Ulaanbaatar. In the capital city you will be picked up at the airport and transferred to your hotel.
2nd option: Car transportation to Khovsgol Lake
Day 1. In the morning you will be picked up form a gathering point and drive to Bulgan, the capital city of Bulagan province, one of Mongolia’s prettiest aimag capitals. On our way there we will pass Darkhan and Erdenet, two very important industrial centres of Mongolia. In Bulgan we will stop in a local hotel. (L, D) Distance : 467 km on paved road
Day 2. In the morning we will leave Bulgan and drive to Murun, the capital city of Khuvsgul province. On our way we will stop to visit the Uran Togoo Tulga Uul Natural Monument, a national protected area located about 60 km directly west of Bulgan city around the extinct volcanoes Uran Togoo, Tulga Togoo, and Jalavch Uul. From there we will drive straight to Murun, where we will stay overnight in a hotel. (B,L, D) Distance: 353km
Day 3. After breakfast you will leave Murun and drive to Khatgal, a port city located on the banks of Khuvsgul Lake. From there you will be transferred to a ger camp, in which you will stay during the Ice Festival. After lunch you will be able to explore the area, try some skating, horse riding and trekking. Day 4. Today after breakfast your guide will take you to the opening ceremony of the Ice Festival. After the ceremony you will see an ice wrestling competition, an ankle bone shooting, and of course a skating race. You will also have an opportunity to watch traditional Mongolian clothing show and folklore concert. (B, L, D)
Day 5. Today you will be able to enjoy second round of skating competition, reindeer and horse sledding race, rope pulling competition among many others. After dinner you will attend the festival’s closing ceremony with shamanistic performance fallowed by bonfire. (B, L, D)
Day 6. After breakfast you will drive back from Khuvsgul Lake National Park to Bulgan. Stay overnight in a hotel. (B, L,D) Distance: 480 km
Day 7. Leave Bulgan and drive to Amarbayasgalant, a remote buddist monstery located in the Iven Valley. Visit the monastery and stay overnight in yurts belonging to a local nomad family. (B,L,D) Distance: 200km
Day 8. Drive back from Amarbaysgalant to Ulaanbaatar. (B,L) Distance: 361 km
