One year after reintroducing Takhi (Przewalski's) horses to the area, Khustai Nuruu National Park was declared a Special Protected Area of Mongolia. The park extends through the Khentii Mountains and across the Mongolian steppe to the west.
About 100 kilometers west of Ulaanbaatar, Khustai covers 50,600 square kilometers and is home to two species of amphibians, 16 species of fish, 44 species of mammals, 217 species of birds, and 385 species of insects.
In 2002, UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Reserves certified the Khustai Nuruu National Park as a natural reserve in the world's network of biosphere reserves.
